TABLE OF CONTENTS

introduction

Worthwhile books, I think, have this in common: they are rereadable. They are like good country air; one can never get enough. And their writers are the types of people you would call jolly friends if time and circumstance had allowed it. I'm in a continuous search for such books and I hope that this page, a sort of meet my best friends, will bless you in your search for a fresh lung-full.

Non-fiction

One of the worlds wisest men once wrote that the beginning of knowledge is to seek it. If knowlege were dew, then books are pools where we can suck it all up without a great deal of searching. Here are some of my most-worn:

The Practice of the Presence of God

Brother Lawrence

Brother Lawrence's book is a call to make the awareness of God a continual habit.

Orthodoxy

G.K. Chesterton

GK Chesterton's wondering trip is a deep dive into the mystery of life and Christianity. Expect to come out the other side drenched drenched with wonderful images of truth and the shocking realisation of how magical this world is.

Mere Christianity

C.S. Lewis

One of CS Lewis's most influential works, Mere Christianity lays out what Lewis believes to be the core principles of Christianity and is still one of the best apologetic works put to the page.

The Pursuit of God

A. W. Tozer

We should all long after God as a dear pants after water. A. W. Tozer's simple conversation, filled with conviction, calls us to quicken a longing for God and to steel ourselves in a determined pursuit of our maker.

Ploductivity

Douglas Wilson

Tools are a form of wealth and we are meant to be good stewards over them. A rigorously blunt book on managing wealth and time, and using both to the glory of God. Strongly recommended to anyone looking for a 'productivity' handbook that does not only teach speed but also how to maintain right heading.

The Problem of Pain

C.S. Lewis

A world of pain made by a perfect creator at first seems to be a contradiction. But true freedom of choice also requires true consequences and cs Lewis does an excellent job of taking us through the reasons why.

fiction

Part of our modern problem is that we're not only mind. We have soul, too. Our imagination needs just as much shaping as our minds if we are to do our work faithfully and the best place to look is at the writers with redeemed imaginations.

The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe

C.S. Lewis

A wardrobe in a professor's old house; but beyond... Narnia! Land of snow and ice and no Christmas. But Lucy and her siblings are to break the enchantment of the White Witch with the help of the great lion; Aslan. A timeless book with so much truth. The entire Narnia Chronicles is recommended for the soulful feeding of any growing little person, or those grown enough to read fairy tales again.

That Hideous Strength

C.S. Lewis

A deep book predicting much of what we see today. Masterfully crafted parallel between the hideous strength twisting men and the humble, crisp goodness of the faithful.
